An Idea – The Endless Loop of Perfection

Have you ever sat and thought to yourself, I have this great idea that could be worth millions if only I knew what to do with it? This happens so much more often to everyone than you would think. A survey by Karen Remick found that nearly 2/3 of all people have had an idea for a new invention but only a tiny percent of them actually follows through. An even smaller percentage of that group actually succeed with taking their idea through to mass production. Inventing is hard, there is no question about that but living with an idea and never knowing what it would do is even harder. I can speak to this from personal experience.

Idea Loop

When I was 11 years old and playing in Jr. Pee Wee football, I told my parents that I hated the way my mouthguard tasted. I said that why don’t we melt them down and add flavors to them. Of course, being 11 and having no practical understanding of chemistry my idea went nowhere and years later flavored mouthguards are everywhere. Now this maybe wasn’t a 100-million-dollar idea but it was definitely an idea that was worth pursuing and patenting. The moral of this story is that evaluating whether an idea is worth pursuing, estimating the cost to bring it to market, and determine the potential of patenting it is hugely important. Here at Inventors Innovation, we can help you determine the road to take your idea to turn it into a product, click here if you want more info. But when do I take my idea to someone, you might ask.

Well, the answer to that question is a simple one that I want to dive into. We’ve all heard the saying, “Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good”, often attributed to the French philosopher, Voltaire. This is especially true when looking at your idea for your invention. Over and over, I speak to people who will tell me they have this great idea but they want to make sure it’s perfect before moving forward. Whether they are self-conscious or think that it won’t succeed if it’s not perfect, it usually varies person to person. Below I’ll show you the best process to work through the steps from ideation to mass production.

  1. I have an idea!
  2. Has this already been invented or is on the market?
    1. If so, how can I make it better?
  3. Is this financially feasible?
    1. How much can I make this product for and how much would it cost to sell?
  4. How will I design this?
    1. Can you design it yourself or do you need to contract someone?
  5. How will I prototype it?
    1. Is this mechanical or electronic or both? Can it be 3D printed, does it need prototype tooling, or does it require other engineering processes like a CNC or lathe.
  6. How will I test it?
    1. How can you get good, repeatable, and analytical results to determine if any changes need to be made?
  7. How can I get it mass produced?
    1. Are you going to make these in your garage, a local machine shop, or outsource overseas?
  8. How do I market my product?
    1. Having a product is only half the battle! Now you need to determine how you can get people to see your product.

Inventors Innovation was created specifically to help you answer these questions and more in a way that is easily digestible for the average person without paying thousands of dollars to a consulting company.
